Discover a piece of historical insight with this original 1946 University of Chicago Round Table radio discussion transcript. This particular edition, Number 409, features a timely and significant debate titled "Congress and the President," broadcast on January 20, 1946. The engaging discussion involves prominent figures of the era: Everett Dirksen, a Republican congressman who would later become a long-serving Senator; Walter Johnson, an esteemed assistant professor of American history at the University of Chicago; and Estes Kefauver, a Democratic congressman from Tennessee, who later gained national prominence as a Senator and Vice Presidential candidate. The booklet also includes a valuable supplement on "The Committee System of The Congress," offering deeper context into the legislative process of the mid-20th century.

This booklet provides a fascinating window into post-World War II American political discourse, capturing the intellectual exchange on critical issues of the time. The cover features the distinctive "Round Table" logo with two figures at a table. Along with a handwritten inscription mostly likely from Estes stating to send it to his mother Mrs R C Kefauver, adding a unique touch of provenance. The back page lists other broadcast transcripts from 1944-1946, highlighting a range of topics from foreign policy and the atom bomb to social and scientific issues. This is a compelling item for collectors of political ephemera, radio history, academic publications, or those interested in the influential voices and debates that shaped the United States during the 1940s.

This item is from the family estate of Tennessee Senator Estes Kefauver. Estes also ran for President and vice President with Stevenson against Nixon/Eisenhower. At one time there was a fire in part of his childhood home. So this item may have some soot staining, discoloration/staining, creasing, has wear around the edges, may have a musty odor from storage with normal estate wear. Please see pictures/scans for more details. We have a large amount of ephemera from the Kefauver estate listed and or will be listing.
