Discover a piece of operatic history with this vintage program from the San Carlo Opera Company. Presented by Fortune Gallo at the Ellis Auditorium in Memphis on February 2 and 3, 1940, this program showcases the company's 30th annual transcontinental tour during the 1939-40 season. It features detailed cast lists for three iconic operas: Verdi's "Aida" and "Rigoletto," and Flotow's "Martha," along with a Ballet Divertisement. The program also lists prominent performers of the era, including sopranos Norina Greco and Lucille Meusel, tenors Araldo Lindi and Dimitri Onofrei, and conductor Carlo Peroni.
This historical document provides a fascinating glimpse into a past era of American performing arts, capturing the grandeur of opera in the pre-war period. It includes full synopses for each opera, offering rich context for collectors of performing arts memorabilia, classical music enthusiasts, and those interested in Memphis history or vintage ephemera. The program is a wonderful collectible, preserving the memory of a significant cultural event.
